#5 - Sport Spotlight 'Jiu Jitsu' with Grant Bradshaw
On Episode 5 of the Musashi R&D Sessions Podcast, Ross and Dhiren are joined by Grant Bradshaw, a black belt in jiu-jitsu under Royce Gracie and Luke Beston, and owner of Iconic Jiu-Jitsu, a Gracie Academy on the Central Coast. This episode focuses a sports spotlight on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the history of the martial art, and how strategy and technique are more essential than strength and size, when applied correctly. The guys address the stigmas attached to different belts, the diversity of athletes that practice the martial art, and the role of jiu-jitsu and Royce Gracie in the origin of the UFC. In sports related news, we speak about the new β96 Bulls documentary, The Last Dance, and rediscover Musashiβs partnership with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. The guys also dive into the auction of Barcelonaβs Camp Nou stadium name, the recent NRL camping scandal, and the 2020 NFL draft viewership record. Similarly discussed is the news that the International Cricket Council is considering legalised ball-tampering in wake of COVID-19. We finish this episode with a pair of listener questions about toning muscle and listening to music during exercise. Even with Grantβs help and small hint from Hal the Intern, the guys canβt quite guess the origin of a famous athlete quote. Once again, Dhiren applies the philosophy of Miyamoto Musashi to the topic using the quote: The true science of martial arts means practicing them in such a way that they will be useful at any time, and to teach them in such a way that they will be useful in all things.
